Somatic Psychotherapy

What is Somatic Psychotherapy?

Somatic or Body-Centered Psychotherapy makes room for you and the body you live in to be known and understood. Sessions incorporate not only talking, but movement (both small and big), yoga postures and breathing exercises. This kind of conscious attunement supports the repair of old wounds and patterns so that you can live more freely as your whole self. Sometimes sessions involve plenty of talking. Sometimes sessions involve more movement. Many people report more concrete and profound changes in their nervous systems and relationships than with talk therapy alone. Think of it as a space to put your whole self into the process of therapeutic work in an experiential way, rather than simply and always talking about the experience.

Approach:

If you are struggling with anxiety, depression, overwhelm, PTSD I can support you to soften and find resilience. If you are navigating big life transitions like divorce, marriage, children, moving, new career or big spiritual emergence I can help in midwifing your path.

I work in a trauma-informed, relational, and soul-centered way. This means I bring a deep understanding of how trauma of all kinds can impact one’s nervous system, self-concept, relationships and vision of the world. It also means I am devoted to cultivating safety and presence with you, so that the work we do together is rooted in the lived experience of connection and support. It also means, I believe that people have unique destinies in life, burdens to navigate, and resilience to be found. Our work is rooted in the knowing that you really can find your way through—with a witness.

Clients often find me spacious yet direct, clear and loving. I am often a bit dry in humor and creative in finding ways to support you in moving whats blocking you, and feeling into whats painful and needs care.

We work with and through your body, supporting the deeper layers of your well and wise consciousness to come to the surface. We welcome sensory awareness and tracking, movements and resourcing of your nervous system to support both large and subtle psychological and emotional shifts. Elements of yoga postural practice, breathing practices, dance, creative arts, meditation and philosophy are brought into sessions.
